Aventon Pace 5 REC ST review: your first e-bike?
Most e-bikes are built to go faster. This one is built to make you smile on the way to the beach.
Buy it if
- You are getting back on a bike after a few years.
- You want something easy and relaxed for getting around town.
- You care more about feeling safe and seen than going fast.
Look elsewhere if
- You want speed, or to cover big distances in a hurry.
- You live in a hilly area and want to attack climbs.
- You want to ride off road.
- Step-through cruiser
- Indicators and brake lights
- Regenerative braking
- 4G and GPS tracking

You can tell what it is about straight away
Low step-through frame, upright seating position and a relaxed cruiser shape. It is easy to get on and off, and it feels solid and well finished.
It comes in five colours. Ours is Sakura, the pink one, which feels exactly right for a beach cruiser. Aventon rates it for riders up to 150 kg.

Drivers know which way you are turning
Integrated front and rear lights, brake lights and proper indicators. On a bike you ride to the cafe, that is the feature that makes the biggest difference in traffic.

Calm in traffic. Calm at walking pace.
You sit upright, it feels stable underneath you, and the assist builds smoothly, so take-offs feel controlled rather than jumpy. Along the foreshore, it is the kind of bike where you notice the water, not the bike.

Regenerative braking, like a hybrid car
When you coast or squeeze the brakes, the rear hub motor puts a little energy back into the battery. Aventon says that is worth up to 5 percent more range, on top of a claimed range of up to 121 km.
The power is tuned to feel smooth and predictable, so it never feels like it is getting away from you. Gearing is Shimano Altus 8-speed.

Keyless battery, charge it inside
The battery unlocks without a key, so you can take it inside to charge without fiddling around. Aventon says it is full in about five hours: plug it in after lunch and it is ready for an evening ride.

Smarter than it looks
4G and GPS tracking show you where the bike is from your phone, and an integrated e-lock engages from the control pad or the app. It even connects to an Apple Watch.
The app lets you fine-tune the ride, and the bike and app both get over-the-air updates. It arrives about 95 percent assembled, with the tools in the box and roughly 20 minutes of work to finish.
For safety, three things stand out
Visibility
Brake lights and indicators, so drivers know exactly what you are doing.
Confidence
An upright position and smooth tuning that keep newer riders in control.
Security
GPS tracking and the e-lock, so it is still there after your coffee.
The one thing to know
This is a cruiser. If you want to cover big distances in a hurry, or attack hills, there are better bikes for that. But that is not what this one is for.
