Canberra bike shop hit by saw wielding burglars for the second time in a year

Three people in black clothing, balaclavas and gloves broke into Pushys in Fyshwick, Canberra, at about 4:23am on 19 September 2026. Security footage shows them cutting through the rear door with a circular saw and getting past the alarm. In roughly five minutes they took four bikes worth about $60,000, plus small parts, a box of chargers and sunglasses worth $200 to $300 a pair.

It is the second time the shop has been hit since it opened a year ago. On 19 April 2026, two electric bikes worth a combined $35,000 were stolen in a similar break-in by two people dressed in black. Between the two burglaries the shop has lost roughly $100,000 of stock.

Not just a shop problem

Store manager Michael Molloy said that pretty much every week, Canberra bike riders will have something stolen. He knows it first hand: his own Santa Cruz e-bike, worth about $21,000, was taken from his garage at home and later turned up listed on Gumtree for $7,800.

The pattern matches the wider data. NSW crime statistics from BOCSAR show motorised bicycle theft rose from 1,644 to 2,080 incidents in the year to March 2026, an increase of 436, or about 27% over two years.

• Photograph your bike and record the serial number so it can be identified if it turns up for sale
• Check online marketplaces if your bike goes missing, because stolen e-bikes are often listed quickly and well below new price
